I recently gave a quick budget update in my principal messenger to disseminate information about our 2019-2020 budget cuts as quickly as possible. The purpose of this communication is to write in more detail.
Budget and enrollment information in March is very preliminary. A lot can change between now and September. Currently, we are slated to displace 3 classroom teachers, a .5 Assistant Principal, .5 Certificated Core (historically used to fund our extra nurse position) and .5 PCP teacher (specialists such as K-multi-arts and technology). As a point of reference, a 1.0 position is full time, working five days a week a View Ridge. Each .2 represents one day of work at View Ridge.
Staffing cuts are impacting all regions of our school district. Personnel is currently categorizing these reductions as “displacements”. Like what we went through in the fall, a displacement means the staff members are likely to still be employed by the district, just not in our building. In past years with significant budget shortfalls, the district has issued “Reduction in Force (RIF)” cuts. A RIF is a layoff. State law requires that RIFs be announced by the district by May 15th.
While all of this is certainly disheartening, there are many things that can change these preliminary figures. We typically have natural attrition due to retirement, leaves, etc. These potential departures would alleviate someone having to be displaced. Also, large portions of district funding are pending legislative action that is supposed to happen by June. This could restore some of our cuts. Our enrollment figures could go up between now and October 1st, restoring some teachers as well. Teachers who are displaced have first dibs on restored positions.
So, as you can see, a lot can change between now and September. In addition to all these possibilities, I am working my tail off to find ways to keep every staff member. We are a very tight-knit staff and losing someone is like losing part of our family. This is a very stressful time for our building and your support right now is greatly appreciated.
